Life is rich in the family pool
 
If you recall the story of mountaineer Jed Clampett of “The Beverly Hillbillies” TV show in the 1960s, after striking oil “he loaded up his truck and moved to Beverly.”
“Hills that is, swimming pools, movie stars,” as the show’s theme song goes.
 
Those were the days when a backyard pool was considered the privilege of the rich and famous, or at least the rich. The movie studios made up their stars to look amazing and arranged photo sessions of them lounging by their pools.
One of the more remarkable and beautiful filmed records of a famous couple was of Lucille Ball and Desi Arnaz playing with their two young children in their family pool, and again, years later, in their grown daughter’s pool with their first grandchild. “Lucy and Desi: A Home Movie” shows the last time the “I Love Lucy” stars were filmed together. Though long divorced, in this clip (https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=woYs85r3aSo),  they’re still affectionate with each other, laughing and having a blast with their grandbaby. Their affection for their family and each other is wonderful to watch. Desi even sings “Babaloo” to his grandson.
 
The scene closes with Desi singing, “I’m in heaven because I love Lucy and Lucy loves me.”
 
These stars playing in and lounging their pools are not all that different from me and you. They find their heaven relaxing with their families in their backyard pools. Two of the best scenes in the movie “The Graduate” happen in the family pool. In the first, Dustin Hoffman as Benjamin Braddock is wearing one of his parents’ graduation gifts--a scuba diving suit. We see him go under, we see him come up, but mostly we hear him breathing deeply underwater as his parents annoy him from the pool’s edge. In the other scene, his father is grilling him about what he’s doing with his summer and what he plans to do with his life. He wonders aloud why his son the graduate is doing little more than hanging out in the backyard pool.   Benjamin replies, “Well, I would say that I’m just drifting here in the pool.”  “Why?!” asks his father.
“Well,” he answers, “it’s very comfortable just to drift here.”

For the moment, Benjamin Braddock is content to lay on a float in the pool.   If you think about it, some of the most serene moments--whether in the movies or in life--take place in swimming pools. During one of the final scenes in “Ferris Bueller Takes Off,” Ferris, his girlfriend Sloane and best friend Cameron end up in a pool after they’ve played hooky from school by exploring Chicago. Cameron takes a deliberate nosedive into the deep end to scare his friends, after which they realize he is stronger than they thought. He’s going to be okay and they’re on the right path as well. Ferris Bueller’s “Day off” becomes a day of epiphany.
